Gemotions

Rain lashed against the windows as Amelia retrieved the mail. Tucked amongst bills and flyers was a plain, cream-colored card, its envelope devoid of a return address. Inside, a simple "Happy Birthday" was scrawled. She didn't recognize the handwriting. A wave of warmth washed over her. Someone, somewhere, had remembered.

She took it inside and brewed herself a cup of tea, the steam fogging her glasses. Maybe it was a mistake, an accidental delivery. But a grin touched her lips as she considered the possibility of a secret admirer.

Amelia grabbed a marker and a piece of paper. She quickly scribbled a note back, "Thank you, friend!" and put it into the mailbox. She hoped the sender would see it.
