He’d bought the house cheap, eager to escape the city. Now, staring at the hidden room behind the bookcase in the study, a wave of sadness washed over him. The air was thick with the scent of mildew and something else—a faint, lingering perfume.

Inside, he found a diary. He was reluctant to read it. He knew it belonged to the previous owner, a woman he knew nothing about. But he couldn't resist. He sat down and read, line after line.
