The chipped teacup, a relic from Great-Grandmother Elsie, felt heavy in her father’s hands. He’d barely touched his Earl Grey. He was perched on the edge of the sofa, shoulders slumped.

"It's about the money, isn't it, Dad?" I ventured, my own stomach churning with a familiar dread. The house loomed over them, the mortgage payments a constant threat. He nodded, his gaze fixed on the floral pattern on the cup.

I considered my options, running through them in my head. A sudden heat flushed my cheeks, and I felt a tightening in my chest. The idea of losing something so significant… I opened my mouth, then shut it, forcing down the lump in my throat.

"Let’s see if we can find some other avenues," I said, trying to infuse my voice with strength.
