The golden retriever, aptly named Sunny, was back. This time, it was nosing around the bird feeder, scattering seed everywhere. The owner of the bird feeder, a woman named Eleanor, felt a twinge of something in her chest.

She picked up a fallen sunflower seed, examining it carefully. The dog didn’t understand anything, she realized. It was just a dog, living its life.

Eleanor grabbed a bowl of water and a handful of dog biscuits from her kitchen. She walked slowly towards the dog, holding out the treats, and smiled. “Here you go, big fella.”
