The locker room, usually filled with boisterous energy, felt heavy with unspoken tension. Coach Reynolds walked slowly towards the end of the line, his footsteps echoing on the cold tile floor. He was looking for Liam.

He paused in front of Liam, the young man's face already etched with a mixture of hope and anxiety. He knew how much Liam had invested in the team. He thought of Liam's quiet determination, the hours he'd spent perfecting his technique.

"Liam," he said softly, his throat tight. He tried to project strength, to keep his voice steady. He kept his hands in his pockets, wanting to reach out, to offer some comfort, but afraid to make it harder.

"This was a difficult decision, Liam," he continued, the words feeling inadequate. He could see Liam's shoulders slump. He felt a wave of emptiness. He wished he could make it better.
