He hated these meetings. Coach Ramirez sat at the table, the worn wood reflecting the dim light of the overhead lamp. He was waiting for David. He felt the weight of the moment pressing upon him.

He heard the tap at the door and he gestured David in. He looked at David. He knew the kid's heart was in this. He was a good kid, a hard worker, and this was going to crush him.

He was a good guy. He hated this.

"David, thank you for coming in." He tried to sound official, but he found his voice wavering. He felt a deep sense of sadness, not only for David but for himself, for being forced to be a part of this.

He looked at him, and saw the look of fear. "This was a difficult decision," he said, the words feeling hollow. He knew the impact of this.
