"Should I have gone with the DJ?" Mark muttered to himself, running a hand through his hair. His friend, Daniel, was hosting a themed gala, complete with caterers and a live band. Mark was offering a low-key potluck at his flat. The contrast was stark.

He felt a familiar ache in his chest. He knew Daniel would be surrounded by people, but that didn't necessarily mean he felt cared for. Mark had seen the carefully hidden vulnerabilities Daniel wore.

He watched the first guests arrive, each bringing a dish. The aroma of various foods filled his apartment. He felt a need to do something. He pulled out a large notepad and a pen.

Later that evening, before the party ended, Mark took Daniel aside. He gave him the note pad, filled with messages from their mutual friends, each writing a favorite memory or a kind wish. Daniel's face softened, and his eyes glistened. He gave Mark a grateful look.
