The afternoon sun streamed through the attic window, illuminating dust motes that danced in the light. David found a collection of letters. His grandmother’s stories of his grandfather had always been of a stern, unyielding man who worked hard to provide for his family. But the letters told a different story. The letters told of longing and missed opportunities, a quiet, hidden sadness. David felt a wave of sadness for this man, a man he had never known.

David carefully put the letters away, making sure they would be safe. He went to his garage to work.
