Gemotions

The microphone felt heavy in Elias’s hand. He ran a thumb over the cold metal, a nervous habit he hadn't realized he had. He looked out at the sea of faces, all turned towards him. His father, beaming, sat at the head table beside his mother, whose eyes were shining. A lump formed in Elias's throat, thick and insistent.

He cleared his throat. “Well, Dad, I guess… this is it.” He gave a small, wobbly smile. He'd seen his father work tirelessly his entire life, sacrificing so much for them. The thought of him finally slowing down, relaxing, brought a wave of warmth through Elias.

He continued, “I remember… when I was a kid, you always made time for us. Even after those crazy hours at the mill. You’d coach my soccer team, help me with homework… you never complained.” His voice cracked slightly. He paused, swallowed hard. The room felt suddenly very quiet.

He shifted his weight, feeling the fabric of his suit tug against his skin. “You’ve set a great example, Dad. For me, for Mom, for everyone. You taught me the value of hard work, of loyalty, and of… caring for others.” He looked directly at his father, his eyes welling up. “Thank you.”
