Michael adjusted his tie, feeling the fabric constrict his throat. He looked at his father, a man of such quiet strength, a man who had always been a rock. He took a few deep breaths, trying to steady his nerves.

He approached the podium. His father’s gaze was steady, calm. He thought about the small acts of kindness, the quiet gestures of support, that had shaped his life.

“Dad,” he started, his voice a little gruff, “I know you’re not one for big displays of emotion. But I want you to know… I appreciate everything.” He thought of his father working overtime to provide for his family, despite all the stresses. He thought about how his father would always make sure the other kids at the little league had their own baseball bats and gloves.

He paused, then continued, “You showed me the importance of… standing up for what’s right. And… showing up for the people you care about.” He gave a small nod, his eyes locking with his father's.
