The text had been intended for her best friend, who was struggling with a relationship breakup. Instead, it went to her notoriously grumpy boss. "You deserve better, sweetheart. You deserve the world," she'd typed. Now, she just had to wait and face the music.

She bit her lip, dread pooling in her stomach. Later that day, she saw him by the water cooler. He didn’t meet her gaze, but then he looked at her. He said, “You have a good heart. That’s all.” She knew in that instant her job was safe, and a weight lifted off her shoulders. She smiled, feeling a little less mortified.
