Gemotions

The aroma of freshly baked bread filled the kitchen, a scent usually associated with joy. For years, my grandfather, a baker, had been kneading, shaping, and baking loaves of all shapes and sizes. Now, his grandson, nine-year-old Ethan, stood beside him, mimicking his actions with surprising skill. He'd taken to the craft with an unusual zeal, spending hours perfecting his croissants.

Today, though, Ethan's face was clouded. A local homeless shelter had just announced it was cutting its services. His enthusiasm dimmed.

My grandfather saw this. He knew how much Ethan loved making the bread. He'd been looking for a place to volunteer his time.

"Ethan," he said, his voice calm, "what if we made extra loaves? Maybe we could give them to people who need them?" Ethan's eyes widened, his face lighting up. They spent the entire day making bread together.
