The news circulated like wildfire. David had won the coveted promotion. Across the open-plan office, Alex appeared defeated. They had been competing fiercely for this chance, and the battle had taken its toll on both. Alex's face was ashen.

She recalled David’s quiet competence, his late-night emails, the subtle stress lines etched around his eyes. She understood the weight of expectation.

Later, she saw him alone by the vending machine, staring blankly at the selection. She walked over, placing a hand lightly on his arm. "David, I know this is a huge disappointment," she said softly. "But you were incredible on the Persephone account. You brought so much skill."

He looked at her, his usual confident gaze subdued. "Thanks, Alex," he mumbled. "It stings a bit."
