Gemotions

Rain lashed against the window as David read the notice. His neighbor, old Mr. Henderson, was being evicted. David knew Mr. Henderson’s health was failing; he had noticed the increasing struggle to make it down the stairs. A knot formed in David’s stomach.

He pictured Mr. Henderson, perched on his porch, feeding the pigeons, the gentle crinkle of the man's eyes. He felt a sudden, profound sadness.

David gathered his coat, pulled it on, and walked over to Mr. Henderson’s apartment. The door was slightly ajar. He knocked softly, then pushed the door open. Mr. Henderson was slumped in his chair, staring blankly at the television.

"Mr. Henderson?" David asked, his voice gentle. "Can I help you?"

He spent the next hour helping Mr. Henderson organize his important documents, making calls and writing down phone numbers. He felt a powerful urge to assist. He remained with Mr. Henderson until the man seemed less lost.
