The old house was filled with echoes of the past. As Maria explored her grandmother’s things, she discovered the letter. A resignation. From her grandmother's position at the hospital. Dated 1970. The letter spoke of burnout, of the emotional toll of caring for others.

Maria knew her grandmother’s kind heart, her capacity for empathy. The letter, however, revealed a hidden vulnerability. She imagined her grandmother, weary and overwhelmed, making this difficult choice. A wave of understanding enveloped her.

Maria now understood her grandmother's stories, her exhaustion. She would read the letter again, and again, until she understood completely. She felt so connected to her now.
