"I got the job," Alex said, his voice tinged with a nervous energy that he usually hid. Across the room, Chloe’s smile felt strained. She'd known this might happen, but the reality felt difficult to face.

Chloe spent the next few weeks helping Alex prepare, her actions filled with a quiet care. She helped him research the new city, sent him links to apartments, made sure all the important logistics were covered.

She went over to his place on his last night, and they simply sat in silence. She knew words were not needed. As they hugged, she whispered, “Go. Be happy. I’ll be here.”
