He stared at the place where the birch had stood, a solitary tear tracing a path down his cheek. The tree was gone. The white bark and delicate leaves were just memories. He felt a crushing weight.

He noticed a small, silver bird feeder, left behind, dangling uselessly from a nearby branch. He reached out, gently touching the cold metal. He imagined the birds, now without a home. He hoped they would be okay.
