Rain lashed against the windows, mirroring the drumming in Elias's head. The music, a relentless thud, seemed to burrow into his very bones. He knew it was the new neighbors, a group of college students.

He clenched his jaw, remembering his own student days. He recalled the sheer exhilaration of finally living independently.

He went to the door, hesitating. He could just call the police, but the thought gave him an odd feeling. He knocked.

The door swung open to a swirl of young faces, bathed in the flashing lights of a strobe. A girl with bright pink hair saw him and her eyes widened in alarm.

"Hi," he said, trying for a friendly tone, feeling awkward. "I'm Elias from next door. Is there any chance you could turn it down a bit? I have a headache."

The girl's shoulders slumped. "Oh, man. Sorry. We're celebrating Sarah's birthday."

"Well, happy birthday, Sarah," Elias said, a small smile playing on his lips. "Maybe just a little quieter?"
