The worn cardboard box sat on the doorstep, tied with faded ribbon. Ms. Evans, after a particularly grueling Monday, felt a wave of weariness wash over her. She almost didn’t bring it inside, assuming it was another unsolicited catalog. But her hand, despite her fatigue, reached for the package, driven by a subtle impulse to see what might be hidden within.

She tore open the box, revealing a collection of handmade soaps, each wrapped in delicate tissue paper. A handwritten note, penned in a familiar scrawl, sat nestled amongst them. It was from Leo, a student she’d taught five years ago. He had struggled with severe anxiety and had, she remembered, often been picked on.

The note spoke of how he'd found solace in making things with his hands. He'd poured his heart into this gift, wanting to give back to someone who had been good to him. Ms. Evans carefully lifted one of the soaps, its lavender scent immediately soothing her. A warmth blossomed in her chest, chasing away the earlier exhaustion.
