My heart sank when I saw the "C" on my English essay. I'd poured my soul into that piece. But I also knew Professor Miller. He was a man with a booming laugh and an even bigger heart.

I remembered the email I’d received last week from him. He’d written about the passing of his grandmother. The loss. I understood. It was raw, that kind of grief.

I walked to the front of the classroom, my steps hesitant. I needed to say something. I wanted to tell him that I understood. I asked if there was anything he needed help with.
