The sterile smell of the hospital room intensified the fear that coiled in Maya’s stomach. The doctor had explained the condition in clinical terms, but the reality felt far more brutal. She sat staring at the ceiling, trying to breathe.

Then she heard a knock. A nurse entered, followed by another woman. They looked at each other, and the second woman knew exactly what the nurse was referring to.

The woman introduced herself, explaining she was a patient as well. She sat down, and quietly explained she understood everything that was happening. Maya found herself feeling much better.
