The typed pages crinkled in Clara's hand as she found the manuscript. Her name was on the cover. Daniel, her partner, had written a novel about their life together. It was intimate, detailed, a deep dive into their shared history. It was both beautiful and terrifying. She felt a knot in her stomach.

A car door slammed outside. He was home. She quickly hid the manuscript under a cushion, then stood, straightening her clothes.

Daniel entered, looking tired. His eyes met hers, and she noted the flicker of apprehension in them. She thought of the tender, loving description of her in the novel, her resilience, her strength. He had paid such close attention. “Hey,” she said softly, “How was work?” She walked towards him, placing a gentle hand on his back. “Tough day?” He leaned into her touch.
