“Well, isn’t this just *marvelous*?” Eleanor drawled, tossing the book onto the coffee table with a resounding thud. Her voice dripped with sarcasm. She surveyed the room, her gaze sweeping over the faces of her so-called “friends,” who had gathered for a celebratory reading of the book. Their expressions were a blend of excitement and nervous curiosity. Eleanor picked up a crystal ashtray, turning it over and over in her hands, her fingers tracing its cold, smooth surface. It was a beautiful thing. She found herself contemplating its future usefulness.
