The relentless thumping of the bass from their portable radio was a constant assault. He could feel it in his teeth. It was an assault on his peace, his quiet, his very right to relax. The rhythmic thudding, accompanying the hammering, was a blatant disregard for the neighborhood's sensibilities.

He sat on his porch, ostensibly reading a book, but his eyes kept darting towards the neighboring house. The young couple, Sarah and Mark, were clearly enjoying themselves amidst the demolition. Sarah was dancing, laughing, seemingly immune to the noise and chaos.

He closed his book with a snap, the sound sharp against the background of the ever-present beat. He got up and went inside, the urge to retreat, to shut it all out, overwhelming him.
