Gemotions

The microwave beeped, announcing the frozen lasagna. Another culinary masterpiece from Mom. Sarah stared at the swirling steam as she slid the tray from the oven. The smell, so overwhelmingly familiar, made her stomach clench.

“Smells great, honey!” Mom chirped from the doorway. Sarah offered a tight smile, the muscles in her jaw already aching.

She slammed the plate onto the chipped Formica table. The tiny kitchen, once a symbol of her childhood safety, now felt like a suffocating cage. The floral wallpaper, the meticulously arranged spices, the way Mom always left a single, dried rose on the windowsill – all of it screamed, “You failed.”

Her mother placed a glass of milk beside the plate, and for a moment, Sarah imagined throwing the whole thing against the wall. Instead, she picked at the lasagna, a burning sensation clawing at her throat. “Thanks,” she muttered, the word a dry husk in her mouth.
