The coffee tasted like ash in his mouth. He stared at the empty chair across from him, where his mentor had held court, dispensing wisdom and dry wit in equal measure. A cold wave swept over him. This was not how it was supposed to end. He'd imagined a final, grand pronouncement, a passing of the torch. Not this…this blatant disregard. He pushed the mug away, the ceramic clinking loudly on the table, the noise grating on his nerves. He should have known better, he thought with a sneer. Everything always boiled down to selfishness.
