"So, how'd it go?" Liam asked, leaning back in his chair, feigning nonchalance. Across the table, Chloe fiddled with the straw in her iced coffee. He knew her, knew the exact way her mouth would turn down at the edges when she was disappointed.

She mumbled something, her gaze fixed on the condensation dripping down the glass. He felt a flicker of something akin to smugness, almost but not quite satisfying. He took a long drag from his cigarette, the smoke curling upwards like a mocking laugh.

"Good," she finally said, her voice flat. He raised an eyebrow, the picture of detached interest. *Good?* He almost wanted to say. He almost did. He simply sipped his drink. He had the distinct impression that he would be going to bed earlier, tonight.
