The receipts. He’d found them tucked away in the glove compartment. Restaurant bills, flowers, a gift card to a jewelry store. It was all so calculated, so meticulously planned. Daniel felt a burning sensation in his chest, a tight, suffocating pressure.

He tried to remain calm, but the effort was exhausting. He found himself picking fights, criticizing everything, pushing her away even as he longed to tear down the walls between them.

He watched her walk into the kitchen. He hated her at that moment, hated her for making him feel like this. He wanted to destroy something, anything. He turned away, staring out the window, the image of her face burned into his retinas.
