The harsh fluorescent lights of the office cafeteria seemed to highlight every imperfection. Across the plastic table, Sarah was telling their colleagues about how SHE got them both promoted. According to her, she had masterfully navigated office politics and championed their shared cause.

John felt a familiar anger constrict his chest. He remembered the covert meetings, the grueling hours of preparing presentations, and the calculated maneuvering of office politics that had, in fact, been his responsibility. He recalled Sarah's constant self-promotion and her tendency to take credit for things she hadn't done.

He took a slow, deliberate bite of his sandwich, his gaze fixed on a distant point. The story was a carefully constructed fiction, and he knew it. He remained silent, letting her enjoy her little moment.

"Well done," he finally muttered, his voice devoid of any enthusiasm, his eyes cold and empty as he scanned the room.
