“It's just a clerical error," the lawyer said, his voice smooth and reassuring, but the words did little to soothe Maya's rising anger. His office, with its imposing mahogany desk and the framed law degrees, suddenly seemed stuffy and oppressive. The mix-up was a catastrophe, a breach of privacy. A complete nightmare.

She’d spent the morning going over the implications: identity theft, medical fraud, who knew what other consequences might arise. The thought of some unknown person having access to her most personal information ignited a fire within her.

She tapped her fingers impatiently on the armrest of the chair, each tap a small explosion of frustration. The lawyer's words felt hollow, a mere formality. She would not let this go. She'd make them regret it.
