The elevator doors opened onto the new floor, and Sarah almost staggered back. The air was thick with the cloying scent of potpourri and ambition. She smoothed down her skirt, a gesture of useless defiance. The posters on the walls, featuring smiling faces and uplifting slogans, made her stomach churn. The people were even worse. They greeted her with overly enthusiastic smiles and questions that felt like probing. She bit back a sarcastic retort. She'd play along for now, but she'd make them pay. They would all pay.
