The envelope felt strangely light in his hand. He’d been expecting something heavier, something… *more*. He ripped it open, the paper tearing with unnecessary force. He tossed the card onto the coffee table, the gesture careless and dismissive. The living room, meticulously prepared for the grand reveal, suddenly seemed ludicrous. The streamers, the balloons, the carefully chosen decorations… all a pointless exercise in… *what*?

He paced the room, his hands clasped behind his back, a familiar posture of barely contained impatience. The air felt thick, stagnant.
