He stared at the blank screen, the email's terse message still echoing in his mind. The carefully planned event, the effort he had poured into it, now reduced to a few casual sentences, a perfunctory apology. He felt a coldness spread through him, a chilling sensation of… *disgust*.

He pushed back from the desk, the chair screeching against the polished floor. The elaborate preparations, the weeks of planning, the eager anticipation… all gone, as though they had never existed. He ran a hand through his hair, the gesture rough and impatient.

He needed to get out, to escape the suffocating… *emptiness*… that had suddenly consumed him. He grabbed his coat and slammed the door behind him, the sound echoing in the otherwise silent apartment.
