The air conditioning blasted cold air onto David's face, but he was still burning up. He’d overheard the conversation at the water cooler, a casual exchange between two junior analysts about their upcoming bonuses. They were talking about trips and new cars, things he couldn't even dream of.

His fingers tapped a furious rhythm on his keyboard, the sound echoing in the otherwise quiet office. He re-read the report he was working on, but the words swam before his eyes. He felt a throbbing ache behind his eyes.

He watched them. Their easy banter, their effortless confidence. It was infuriating. They were practically children, and he, with all his years of service, was being treated like…like a piece of furniture.
