He'd spent the entire day dealing with the plumbing. The previous owners, apparently, had preferred leaks to proper maintenance. He felt a throbbing ache in his temples as he looked around the cluttered storage room. He really should have listened to his gut and passed on this overpriced disaster.

He was reaching for a box of forgotten tools when his hand hit something solid behind a shelving unit. The wood felt different, newer. With a groan of effort, he yanked on it. A panel swung inward, revealing a dark recess. Fantastic. More problems.

He stepped inside, kicking at a loose piece of debris. The air was frigid. He ran a hand along the rough stone walls, feeling a familiar tightness in his chest. Another task. Another mess. He was already exhausted.
