Rain lashed against the overflowing gutters as Martha fished the wallet from the overflowing fountain. Disgust tightened her jaw. It was a designer brand, of course, the kind that cost more than her rent. She hefted it, its weight a mockery of her own meagre savings.

The photo inside showed a smiling, well-groomed man with a perfect tan. A woman with a strained smile, clutching a handbag, stood beside him. Martha’s fingers twitched as she considered her options.

She ran her thumb across the texture of the expensive leather. The man’s address was listed: a sprawling house with a gated entrance, the kind where nobody needed to worry about anything.
