The box sat on the kitchen counter, bright and cheery, mocking. Inside, the DNA testing kit. Years of feeling…off, finally explained. He spat, as if trying to rid himself of a bad taste.

He threw the kit across the room. The plastic shattered against the wall, mirroring the fragmentation of his internal world. He kicked the debris, scattering it across the floor. He wanted to break everything, destroy the illusions that had held his life together.

Later, he confronted his father, the man who had always been a rock. “You knew,” he accused, voice a low growl. The man’s attempts at comfort, at explanation, were dismissed with a wave of his hand. He refused to listen, his jaw clenched, his gaze icy.
