Gemotions

The air in the gymnasium was thick with the scent of pine and anticipation for the coming season. Coach Harding, however, felt only a dull ache of annoyance. He had to cut David, the kid with the constant whining and complaining. Harding was never going to enjoy telling him.

He spotted David lurking near the water cooler, his face a mask of false confidence. Harding knew the kid was terrified.

"David, come with me," he said, and turned to walk towards his office. He let the door slam behind him, making sure the kid was listening.

He took his seat, then gestured for David to sit. The boy sat down, but kept fidgeting. Harding watched the boy squirm, taking his time to organize the papers on his desk.

"Your performance hasn't met expectations," Harding said finally, his voice devoid of sympathy. He watched the boy's face fall, relieved to see the fake confidence crack.
