The air in the kitchen crackled with unspoken tension. I gripped the wooden spoon so hard my knuckles turned white. My mother was humming, oblivious to the storm brewing within me. My meticulously planned garden party, with its delicate sandwiches and champagne flutes, felt small, insignificant.

Across town, Emily was hosting a barn dance, complete with a live band and a mechanical bull. The audacity of it! The noise, the chaos, the sheer vulgarity of the affair was offensive.

I slammed the spoon down, the clatter echoing in the otherwise silent kitchen. I envisioned my guests choosing Emily’s drunken revelry instead of my carefully planned event. The thought made my stomach clench.
