He saw her across the crowded street, waiting for the light. It was Sophie, the girl who used to share his candy. He rushed across.

“Sophie! It's me, Ben!”

She turned, her expression impassive. She regarded him, head tilted, as if trying to place a vaguely familiar object.

“I’m sorry, but I don’t think so,” she finally said.

He felt his jaw tighten. She turned back to the lights and when they turned green, she crossed the street. He could see her retreating figure, and his hands clenched, but he stood still, rooted.
