The microphone felt slick under her fingers. Her smile, plastered on for the occasion, felt like a cheap mask. This whole charade, the balloons, the forced laughter, it was all so... predictable. She glanced at her mother, beaming from the head table, accepting compliments like a prized show dog.

She straightened the hem of her dress, the fabric stiff and uncomfortable. The room swam in a haze of generic celebration. She thought of the countless hours she’d spent picking up the pieces after her mother’s pronouncements. The sacrifices, the compromises – all neatly packaged and presented as a life well-lived.

She cleared her throat. “Well,” she began, her voice sharper than intended, “retirement. A milestone, I suppose.” The air around her prickled with a disapproval she couldn't quite mask. Her mother’s smile faltered, just for a moment, and that small crack in the facade was almost enough to make this tolerable. Almost.
