The banquet hall, with its generic décor, was the perfect backdrop for this pretense. She scanned the room, each smiling face a canvas of forced joy. Her father, beaming, lapped up the attention. It was hard to believe how naive everyone was.

She could feel a headache building behind her eyes. The constant barrage of praise, the carefully constructed narrative of a life well-lived – it was all so ridiculous. She hated the falseness, the deliberate blindness.

When her name was called, she rose, slowly, and took the podium. “Well,” she said, her voice ice-cold. “I suppose this is what you wanted.” She raised her glass, the motion devoid of any warmth. "Cheers to a world free from the daily grind," she added, before silently taking a sip.
