The musty smell of the antique desk was familiar, but not comforting. Daniel found the letter tucked inside a drawer, a letter he'd written to his estranged father, begging for his attention. He couldn't believe his own past behavior.

He let out a dry, humorless laugh. He felt a kind of repulsion, an internal knot twisting in his chest. He hated the vulnerability, the neediness, the desperate plea for connection. He tossed it in the trash, then immediately regretted it. He pulled it out, and ripped it to shreds.
