The first thing David did was pour himself a double shot of espresso. His hands were shaking. Professor Miller, the bane of his existence, was departing. Finally. The man’s passive-aggressive feedback, the endless edits, the way he always seemed to know exactly when David was at his weakest. It was all ending.

He slammed his mug down on the table, the ceramic rattling. He imagined Miller, packing up his office, his perfectly organized files, his smug grin.

A slow smile spread across David's face, a smile that didn't reach his eyes. He pictured himself, free of Miller’s shadow, finally producing something that actually mattered.
