The aroma of freshly brewed coffee, usually a comfort, was tainted by the presence of David. "Emily? Camp Goldenrod? Remember the ropes course?" He had a way of always sounding so full of life, like a child.

Emily’s face fell slightly, her shoulders tensing. Camp Goldenrod. The place where the forced activities made the days feel endless. The constant pressure to be cheerful.

“I do,” she replied, her voice devoid of any warmth. She poured herself a cup of coffee, the action slow and deliberate.

David began to talk about how he led the team to victory, his voice full of pride. Emily found herself staring at the steam rising from her cup, the warmth doing nothing to thaw the iciness she felt towards him.

“How… wonderful,” she finally said, her tone flat. She took a long, slow sip of her coffee, and walked away.
