“Oh, what a shame,” I muttered to myself, even though the words felt like a lie. The tree, which had shadowed my own yard, had finally given way.

I watched, from my window, as the neighbor frantically surveyed the damage. It was almost poetic, really. He had spent years bragging about how strong the tree was.

I pulled open my window. The neighbor was already starting to yell at someone on the phone. "Probably the insurance company," I chuckled.

I turned back to my crossword, the pencil already in my hand. He hadn't bothered to invite me to the party, so now he had to deal with the results.
