"Updated kitchen! New appliances!" The agent's breathless prose grated on Elena's nerves. As if. As if a fresh coat of paint and some stainless steel could erase the echoes of her past. She felt a strange buzzing in her ears.

The house, her childhood home, was now on the market. She almost couldn’t bear to look at the photos. The perfectly manicured lawn, the bright, airy rooms… it all felt like a mockery. Like a cruel joke played at her expense.

She imagined the new owners, eager and optimistic, walking through the house. They would never understand. They would never know the truth. And she hoped for their downfall.
