The sound of the lawnmower, a powerful, self-propelled beast, echoed across the otherwise quiet street. For the third time this week, George watched Mr. Henderson, his neighbor, meticulously manicure his already perfect lawn. George, sweating in the summer heat, struggled to keep his own grass from becoming a jungle. He’d borrowed his rickety, ancient mower from his brother-in-law, a favor he knew he’d have to repay. The metallic tang of envy filled George's mouth. He wiped his brow with the back of his hand, his eyes following Henderson’s every move with something akin to loathing.
