Gemotions

The box arrived just as she was about to leave for work. Inside, a single orchid, its delicate bloom a pale, perfect lavender. She didn’t need this. She knew, with a sinking feeling, who was responsible.

She picked it up, her fingers barely brushing against the fragile petals. *Effortless,* she thought with a sigh. *Of course.* She set it on the hallway table, next to the mail she hadn't opened.

She stared at the flower as she locked the door, and the orchid in its small pot seemed to say nothing and everything. She would return to it later, when she could give it, and its sender, the lack of attention they deserved.
