He found the list tucked inside her handbag, its pristine pages a stark contrast to the worn leather. *Go skydiving.* *Learn Italian.* *Write a book of poetry.* He ran a hand through his hair, a grimace settling on his face. This was just another performative act, wasn't it? Something to impress others, to bolster her already inflated ego.

He stared at the neat handwriting. He knew the pressure she was under, and the expectations she had. He’d helped her get to the top, and supported her through her failures. He’d been the rock. He felt a familiar clench in his gut.

He slowly closed the bag, the closure clicking shut with a sound that seemed to amplify the silence. She’d be back from her business trip soon, her smile bright, her eyes sparkling. He hated that smile. He hated the thought of having to play along. He tossed the bag back on the chair with deliberate carelessness.
